Looking back 3 years ago, I was really uncertain how to start a business specifically. That's the main reason I'd like to share to you how I got into my business today and how I got clarity in achieving my dreams through it. I understand that it’s really hard to know where to start and to see how a business you are considering today would really get you into your dreams. I also would like to share to you the essentials that I consider for you to find your own path into doing the real thing. You do not have to do the same things I did for what I considered may not be the one for you. I hope you will find the next paragraphs as informative and enjoyable and most especially would move you into taking action today.
- REASON GREATER THAN REALITY.
Let’s start with how I got my reason greater than my reality. One day, I was so bored with my Christmas bonus that I cannot buy my own laptop. For the last 2 years, I bought some liabilities with my bonus but this time I couldn’t since it’s not enough to buy a laptop. So I considered a new hobby. And I chose reading books - any books. It may be novels, inspiration, self-help or maybe business. I couldn’t stomach choosing novels and imagining reading it for weeks. So I considered self-help or some non-fiction that would develop me as a person. Then I saw WHY WE WANT YOU TO BE RICH. It was a small black book with the two faces of the authors. I saw Donald Trump. I know him. The other is Robert Kiyosaki. Who the hell is he? I read on and he was the author of the bestseller Rich Dad Poor Dad. Oh, that title is familiar to me. The price was Php 295. I thought it was really a bargain for two great authors in one handy book. As I read the book, I was so astonished and eager to read every page. I’m not a bookworm. I became one when I found my purpose in life inside that book. I’ve been longing to make a huge difference for a lot of people. That book showed me how I can do it. I committed to be part of the solution – not part of the problem. And so, the journey began. - KNOW HOW TO SELL.
I hate selling. A lot of people do. I hate pleading on anybody. Why do I have to? “If you want to be an entrepreneur you need to know how to sell.” This was printed in that little book and it’s really going to be uncomfortable. I need to know how to sell. But I will not sell alone. If I have to do a shameful thing, I have to do it with my friends. So I persuaded my friends to come with me to the journey of business. We tried to start a business. We considered t-shirt printing. It ended up to id printing. Then it didn’t happen. I was desperate to start selling. I decided to do it alone. I started to sell sarong, malong and tubao. When I got the inventory, I persuaded my friends again. I started selling with friends. It wasn’t so bad. I learned the experience of selling. Looking back, I’m happy I did it. I saw how relentless I was to really do something just to learn and get started. - LEARN BUSINESS SYSTEMS.
As we were selling, I continued to read more business books. I learned more about the CASHFLOW QUADRANT. I learned the difference of self-employed and business owner. Of course I want to be a business owner. I wanted to be rich and financially free so I can do the things that are really important to me. Things like being part of the solution and not part of the problem. Things like providing employment. Things like building my own tower – Ludwig Tower. I realized the importance of learning to create or understand business systems by reading that book and also the GUIDE TO INVESTING both by Robert Kiyosaki. I further understood this when we started a small rental property in Davao. My family and I started it by converting our 2nd home into an income generating asset. We also started to revamp the farm. My parents were self-employed. I understood the importance of a business system. The business owner can leave his business for a year and still expand and gain profit because it has a business system. My parents were self-employed because they were the system. If they leave the business, there is no expansion and profit. As you get to study it, you will understand it’s hard for a self-employed (also considered as small business) to expand or if ever they could expand. We couldn’t expand for my parents couldn’t create a business system and they are too scared to delegate. It became a friction to how we handle the business. We fought almost every other day. As I reflect today, I regret I shouted to my father making him feel how stupid can he be with the old age he already had. I regret I showed that to my mom and broke her heart how I think my father is too small and stupid as a person. I realized the importance of mentors and leadership. I realized we needed mentors since all of us are novices in business success. I realized I needed leadership for I shattered our team. I almost left them behind with our endeavors but I was the one who started it. - FIND A MENTOR.
With the sad experience, I committed to make a huge difference in my journey to business success. I was determined to find someone who can teach me to be successful. I was determined to find a mentor. I didn’t consider Henry Sy, Lucio Tan or Ayala. I was sure they will not teach me what they do. But if I were to go back, I might do so. Today, with my business, my goal is to work with them in the future after I created a powerful track record. Going back to finding mentors I found a few. I met a business owner of a coffee shop. He was a friend of my officemate. I was surprised he uses Robert Kiyosaki books as guide for his managers in the US. He had a consultation office. He couldn’t teach me all throughout since he is a very busy man. The 2nd mentor that I met was a former employee in San Miguel. He was really good in setting marketing goals. We didn’t had a follow through since he was into spiritual success as of the moment. I constantly look and constantly blog and tried a few businesses. I tried online marketing and considered to franchise if ever I couldn’t find a mentor. That way I can also learn business systems and selling. I was also ready to go into network marketing to learn sales and leadership skills. I didn’t care much of the profit at that time. Then I got an invitation to a free business course. I was also considering going into seminars at that time. I was considering free since I almost consumed a lot of money in my previous business engagements. When I went to the free business course, I found a business community. I didn’t know this will be the community that will guide me into becoming a powerful business leader. Little did I know that I will become one of its greatest leaders in transforming powerful entrepreneurs. When I was inside, a new world opened to me. The mentors and coaches that I have been looking for who will teach me sales marketing, business systems and leadership are finally at my grasps! - HAVE OR JOIN A WINNING TEAM.
My first team was my officemates. Our journey didn’t go so well. My 2nd was my family. I learned more and had more realizations in our mistakes. The community was next. What would be the outcome? It was perfect for me! I was in a team of success-driven people. I was with people who are committed to make me successful. I found a second family who will guide me to my journey to business success. I found a very supportive environment. One of my recent realizations while I was watching a war movie was the importance of learning to be in a team. In historic wars in the times of dynasties in China, one bandit warlord said that in their time they cannot survive if they are not with brothers. I then realized we are not taught in our traditional education system the importance of teamwork. We are constantly competing to be valedictorians and first honors. And as I learn more about leadership and teamwork, I cannot accomplish big if I do it alone. I have to be in a team. I first joined a team a winning team and that is the community. I was then taught how to have my own winning team. As I mentor aspiring entrepreneurs today, I create a winning team that will further enhance the power of the community. We will accomplish bigger dreams. - LEARN HOW TO BE A LEADER.
One of my greatest fulfillments so far inside the community is I finally realized and finally saw that I can really be a great and powerful leader. I’ve always been a leader as a child. I was first intrigued with the word charisma. But I always had a doubt if I would ever experience leading people and create a huge success. I became a president in high school. I became a president in college. I persuaded my officemates to play computer games with me and be addicted to it. Somehow, even before pursuing business, I knew I have leadership potential. In business, leadership is essential. You cannot lead a team to success if you do not know leadership. You cannot have a successful big business if you do not know how to run a team. Today, I can lead people more skillful than me. I can also make people become loyal to me. As I grow to be a great powerful leader, I know I can be a greater contribution and I come closer to being a huge part of the solution and not part of the problem.
I found my business in distribution today with the community. Was I scared to pursue? Yes, of course. There will always be fear in pursuing something new to you and something you will risk to a venture again. Earning was secondary to me. The primary reason is to grow and learn new skills with a winning team. I considered the growth and the team that I will be with. Am I earning? Yes, definitely. Like what we say that money follows growth, my growth is measured with how much I earn. The earnings in business are worth it than the earnings I had in employment. The energy and effort are more worth it in business than in the employment. I’m not saying quit your job. What I’m saying is consider going into business even if part-time.
Being in business today made me understand what Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki are saying in WHY WE WANT YOU TO BE RICH. They say that people who are too scared to take risks will miss the enjoyment in being in the game. I now definitely understand the game of the rich. You are living at the edge but you understand that as you give more effort to it you know it will be for your future. Therefore, if you are considering in going into business today, I would like to personally congratulate you for a new world of excitement will open up for you. And this world is full of surprises. You will even surprise yourself with what you can do. You will be surprised of the abilities that you have never used before. I never knew I can make people successful in business. I never knew I can empower and motivate people. I never knew I can create a commission in business. What would the possibilities show and surprise you?
